In 2004, Gabriela was a recipient of a grant from the Albert Schweitzer Foundation, an award that enabled Gabriela to create and direct the Boston Hope Ensemble, this program is now part of Winsor Music. A firm believer in the healing properties of music, Gabriela and her colleagues have performed in cancer units in Boston hospitals and presented benefit concerts for cancer research organizations in numerous venues throughout the United States. A fierce champion of contemporary music, Gabriela has been fortunate to work closely with many significant composers on their own compositions, namely Pierre Boulez, Magnus Lindberg, Frederic Rzewski, Alvin Lucier, Unsuk Chin, John Zorn, Joan Tower, Roger Reynolds, Chaya Czernowin, Steve Reich, Tania León, Brian Ferneyhough, and Helmut Lachenmann. Gabriela is a member of several Boston-area contemporary music groups, including Sound Icon, Ludovico Ensemble, BMOP, Dinosaur Annex, Boston Musica Viva, and Callithumpian Consort. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, he has remained at UMassBoston since 1993. His research interests include carbon cycling in coastal waters, contaminants in urban harbors, and the application of coastal sensor networks to societal needs. He is also dedicated to ocean and environmental science education and outreach at the local, national and international levels. In graduate school at UC Berkeley, she was able to combine her interest in environmental activism with a fascination with molecular biology and pursued research in Molecular Toxicology. She worked for three years at the Environmental Protection Agency before becoming a professor at UMass Boston. At the EPA, she learned to work with interdisciplinary teams to use chemistry and biology to guide new policy and realized her passion for solving wicked problems. Helen’s current research focuses on applying genomics to better understand sub-lethal effects of environmental pollutants and the consequences of adaptation to pollution. She led the genome project for an important sediment dwelling animal, Hyalella azteca, and has recently been involved with collaborative initiatives to identify ways evolution can inform risk assessment and better bridge the disciplines of evolution and toxicology. She is also working on a Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) Project in Vieques, PR where she hopes to bring her molecular experience to uncover hidden pollution threats. Recently, Helen’s interests have also expanded to understanding how climate change stressors and pollutants interact, causing new impacts to coastal and aquatic ecosystems. Helen is also a passionate teacher of environmental science and a mentor for undergraduate researchers. She is the director of a NSF sponsored Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program to train young scholars in transdisciplinary coastal research. His approach is to find solutions to create more food, waste less of it and to help the entire value chain do a better job creating the food we already produce. He has an undergraduate degree in Animal Science from the University of Illinois, and a PhD in Animal Behavior and Ecology from Syracuse University. It is this combination of agriculture and theoretical ecology that allowed him to successfully engage in the aquaculture arena. Previously, he spent over 20 years working with industry to model the carrying capacity of salmon aquaculture in Newfoundland, and then with NGOs to develop robust certification programs and market-based initiatives. As an academic, Michael educates the next generation leaders necessary to develop integrative solutions to create enough food for our burgeoning population.
