Julie Ingelfinger

Dr. Julie Ingelfinger is a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a senior consultant in pediatric nephrology at MassGeneral Hospital for Children while serving concurrently as deputy editor of the New England Journal of Medicine, the oldest continuing medical journal in the world.
Her scientific accomplishments include the demonstration that all components of the renin-angiotensin system are produced within the kidney. She has also advanced our understanding of sexual dimorphism in the kidney and of the function of the renin-angiotensin system within the kidney and vasculature. She currently is focusing her research on the effect of gestational diabetes on offspring.
Dr. Ingelfinger is the author of more than 300 papers, 13 medical books and a book for lay readers, Coping with Prednisone, and edits the textbook Pediatric Hypertension, now in its fourth edition.
She is a past president of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and a past chair of the International Pediatric Hypertension Association, and has served on numerous professional committees and editorial boards. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation have recognized her contributions with honors and awards.
After receiving an A.B. from Harvard University (Radcliffe College) and an M.D. from Einstein, Dr. Ingelfinger interned at Bronx Municipal Hospital, completed a residency and fellowship at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and was a resident at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center (Phoenix). She has been at Harvard since 1973.
